Handouts and Videos

Below we list some of our favourite self-help resources from various sources, spanning handouts, books, and videos.

CBT Self-Help Workbooks from CCI

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that focuses on the links between our thoughts (cognitions), behaviours, and emotions. CBT has sets of techniques to help change our thoughts and behaviours in healthy ways that can improve our mental health, well-being, and capacity to manage emotions. There is a lot of research supporting that CBT is beneficial for a wide range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, substance use issues, self-esteem problems, burn out, and eating disorder symptoms.

The Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI) is a government organisation in Western Australia that has developed a wide range of CBT self-help workbooks for different types of mental health difficulties. These can be useful resources for learning about different mental health conditions, different CBT techniques, and getting practice applying CBT techniques in your life.

Smiling Mind – Free Mindfulness App

Mindfulness is a technique where we practice bringing attention to the present moment, with an attitude of openness and curiosity. We can often spend so much time in life caught up struggling against difficult thoughts and feelings, using so much energy trying to desperately get rid of them. Mindfulness can help us to let go of that struggle sometimes, to give us more time and energy to invest into pursuing activities we value, and being fully present whilst doing them.

Mindfulness activities can focus on different things, like emotions, thoughts, being present during activities, developing compassion for ourselves, or using our breath as an anchor during turbulent times. Research supports that mindfulness practice has substantial benefits for improving mental health and well-being.

One of our favourite Mindfulness apps is Smiling Mind. This is a free app for your smart phone that includes a variety of different mindfulness activities. You can do individual activities, or choose to do programs where there are different mindfulness activities offered to do over different days and weeks.
